Out of the Mouths of Babes...

Over the past few months, we have had a lot of conversations about how people would react to Ella's hand. The ones we were most curious about were the little kids - specifically our nieces/nephews and then Ryan and Shawn's kids. Our first round of nieces will get to meet her in a few weeks, but we had our first child curiosity moment the other day and it couldn't have gone better.

On the first couple of meetings, we were somewhat amazed that the four-year old twins didn't even notice it. But, that all changed on Thanksgiving. The (almost) three-year old met her for the first time and immediately started to examine it. He didn't ask anything...just alternated between stroking her face and turning her left hand around to figure it out.

One kid notices something and suddenly, everyone notices it. The four-year olds came flying over, looked surprised and asked "What happened??" I have to admit that I froze for a second even though we have had many conversations about how to answer these questions. But, I pulled it together and simply said "Nothing happened, Sweetie...she was just born that way." One of them thought for a second, looked at her again and said "Yep, that's her big hand and that's her little hand." They both then just kissed her and walked away.

Why can't we all respond as well as children sometimes?

Doctors Galore!

Ella has had her fair share of doctor's appointments this week. On Monday, we had our follow-up with Dr. Waters at Children's Hospital. He thinks she is looking great and feels strongly that she will do well without a prosthetic or a transplant. We will follow-up with him every six months for the first couple of years and then every year after that. If in the future, she wants a prosthetic or a transplant, both should have improved in terms of use and safety. So, all good news.

Then today, Ella had her one-month appointment with the pediatrician. The short version is that she's doing awesome and hates shots...a lot. She is now 11 lbs and 3 ozs (90th percentile) and 23 inches (95th percentile).

Finally, when you go to the doctor's office, you have to look cool...
